Everything you need to know about renting a car in St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix — including the rental car rule for the ferry.
St. Thomas has the widest selection of rental car companies in the USVI, including major national brands at the airport and well-regarded local operators. Most companies offer free airport pickup or are located at Cyril E. King Airport. Book in advance during high season — the fleet gets thin quickly.
St. John's roads are steep, hilly, and in some places quite rough — a 4WD Jeep or SUV is not just recommended, it's essentially necessary for reaching the island's best beaches and viewpoints. All rental companies are in or near Cruz Bay, most within walking distance of the ferry dock.
St. Croix is the largest of the USVI and the most spread out — a rental car is the best way to explore everything from Christiansted to Frederiksted and the island's stunning East End. Major companies operate at Henry E. Rohlsen Airport (STX) and in Christiansted near the QE IV Ferry dock.
This is written into the rental agreement of nearly all USVI rental car companies — including Budget, Avis, Discount, and most local operators. Taking a rental car on the Boyson Inc. car ferry to St. John without explicit written authorization from the rental company is a violation of your rental agreement.
Violations can result in fees equal to the full replacement value of the vehicle — potentially tens of thousands of dollars. This catches tourists off guard constantly, especially those who don't read the fine print.
Budget St. Thomas has historically allowed their vehicles on the ferry to St. John. Always confirm this policy in writing at the time of booking — policies can change. Do not assume permission without written confirmation from the rental company.
