About Water Island

Water Island is the fourth-largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and one of the least visited — which is exactly what makes it special. With a population of just a few hundred residents, the island offers a genuine escape from the bustle of St. Thomas just 10 minutes across the water.

There are no hotels, no chain restaurants, and no regular cars on Water Island. Golf carts are the primary mode of transport. The centerpiece of the island is Honeymoon Beach — a calm, protected bay with excellent swimming, snorkeling, and a laid-back beach bar.

Water Island has an interesting history as a former U.S. military installation. The ruins of Fort Segarra — a World War II era underground military complex — are visible on the island and make for a fascinating hike.

🏖️
Swimming
The calm, protected waters of Honeymoon Bay are perfect for swimming. The bay is sheltered from ocean swells, making it safe and gentle even for young children.
🐠
Snorkeling
Good snorkeling along the rocky edges of the bay. Bring your own gear or rent it from Heidi's on the beach. Look for reef fish, sea turtles, and the occasional ray.
🍹
Heidi's Honeymoon Grill
The beloved beach bar and grill at Honeymoon Beach. Cold drinks, fresh food, beach chairs, and snorkel rentals. A Water Island institution — don't miss it.
Kayak & SUP
Kayaks and paddleboards are available for rent at the beach. Paddle around the bay or out toward the nearby mangroves for a quiet afternoon on the water.
